African Fabric Batik Wall Hanging
Batik is the name of the technique used to decorate cloth, mostly using wax and dye and has been practiced in Zimbabwe for many generations. Hand made using 100% locally sourced cotton, select areas of the batik are blocked out by brushing or drawing hot wax over the cloth and then the fabric is submerged in a natural liquid, whereby wax acts as a color blocker. Starch batiks are most of an instant method where a slurry of starch is used to draw on the fabric, creating outlines of the design. The color is then directly applied by painting the textile dye on whereby the starch acts as a color blocker.
